Captain Kyle O’Neill

Captain Kyle O’Neill has served with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) for over 21 years. From 2018 to 2023, he was SDFD’s first Cancer and Health Coordinator, overseeing the department’s Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program (CAPP) within the Health and Safety Office. He continues to serve on the SDFD Occupational Health and Safety Committee, FIRESCOPE Cancer Prevention Subcommittee, and Lithium-Ion Battery Ad-Hoc Committee. He is also the California Assistant State Director for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN).

Captain O’Neill has contributed to the development of cancer prevention policies at the city, county, and state levels. He is actively involved in the Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study and other research efforts. In 2019, he secured a $108,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to purchase 47 NFPA 1851-compliant PPE extractors. His ongoing efforts include promoting post-fire decontamination, clean cab practices, and personal hygiene protocols.

He has received multiple honors, including the San Diego County Fire Chiefs' 2023 Maltese Award, a lifesaving medal, and two exceptional performance citations. A cancer survivor himself, Captain O’Neill brings personal experience to his advocacy and continues to support firefighters facing a cancer diagnosis.
